Plug Day has come and gone on Lake Martin. The lake is filling back up, and boating season is just around the corner. Before you head out on the water, now is the perfect time to brush up on boating safety. Whether you are a first-time boater or a seasoned captain, two upcoming classes can help you prepare. Both are hosted through Russell Marine and offer practical, hands-on training tailored to life on Lake Martin.
Why Boating Safety on Lake Martin Matters
Lake Martin is one of Alabama’s most beloved destinations for boating, watersports, and family fun. With hundreds of miles of shoreline and thousands of boats on the water during peak season, safety is a top priority. The Alabama Marine Police actively patrol Lake Martin to enforce safety regulations. Knowing the rules — and how to handle unexpected situations — can make the difference between a great lake day and a dangerous one. Taking a boating safety course is one of the best investments you can make before the season begins.

The Lake Martin Boating Safety Course
For boaters of all experience levels, the Alabama Marine Police will conduct an official boating safety course at The Ridge Marina on April 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This course is both NASBLA and Alabama Boating Safety-certified. It is hosted by Russell Marine and open to all boaters — beginners and veterans alike.
This comprehensive course covers the essentials of safe boat operation. Participants can expect to learn navigation rules, proper use of safety equipment, and how to handle emergencies on the water. Even if you have been boating for years, a refresher can sharpen your skills and keep you current on Alabama’s regulations. Many boaters leave this type of course saying they didn’t realize how much they didn’t know. To secure your spot, contact Rhonda Perry at The Ridge Marina directly. Seats are limited, so register early.
Women on Lake Martin Boating Class
Russell Marine also hosts the popular Women on Lake Martin Boating Class each spring. This four-hour, hands-on course is designed specifically for women who want to gain confidence and practical experience behind the wheel of a boat. It covers the basics of boating safety and operation in a relaxed, down-to-earth setting that encourages questions and hands-on practice.
The class includes on-water demonstrations using some of the most popular boats on Lake Martin. Participants work alongside experienced instructors in a welcoming, supportive environment. Whether you are brand new to boating or simply want a refresher, this course gives you the foundation to navigate Lake Martin safely and independently.
For 2026, the Women on Lake Martin Boating Class is offered on two dates at two different locations. The first session is on March 28 at River North Marina. To register for the March class, contact Lee Cook at Russell Marine’s River North Marina by calling 256-397-1502 or emailing [email protected]. The second session takes place on April 18 at Kowaliga Marina. For the April class, contact Kendra Naile at Russell Marine’s Kowaliga Marina by calling or emailing. Both sessions run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This event fills up fast every year due to limited availability. If you are interested, do not wait to register.

What to Know Before You Get on the Water
Beyond attending a class, every boater on Lake Martin should be familiar with Alabama’s boating requirements. Alabama residents 12 and older can obtain a boating license, though no one under 14 may operate a boat alone. Non-residents may operate a boat on Alabama waters for up to 45 days per year without a license. All boats must carry a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device for every person on board.
The Lake Martin Resource Association (LMRA) plays an important role in keeping the lake safe. They maintain the buoy system that marks underwater hazards throughout the lake. If you spot a damaged or displaced buoy, report it to the LMRA at lmra@lmra.info. In an emergency on the water, the Alabama Marine Police in Alexander City can be reached at 256-329-2268. TowBoatUS Lake Martin is available 24 hours a day at 256-307-1313 for mechanical issues or breakdowns.
